Beware the Effects of Winter Sun

Sunglasses are rarely forgotten during hot and sunny summer afternoons, but they are too often overlooked during the winter months. Yet ultraviolet or UV rays from the sun are powerful all year round. Plus, the sun is at a lower elevation in the sky creating increased glare. In fact, the glare of winter can actually be as difficult and dangerous as on a sunny summer day. It is very important to protect your eyes while outside working or if you are participating in recreational activities such as skiing, snowboarding or ice skating.

Snow and ice can reflect 80 to 90 percent of UV rays, while grass only reflects

2.5 to 3 percent of UV rays.

	Choosing the Right Sunglasses

According to The Vision Council, the best way to select sunglasses is to look for sunglasses

	with the following features:

	• Polarized or mirror-coated lenses to filter reflected glare from shiny surfaces like water, pavement and dashboards.

	• Oversized frames to protect the sides of your eyes from UV rays, as well as for keeping out dust and debris.

	• Lens tints that can improve performance by enhancing contrast, colors and visibility.

	• Look for sunglasses marked as 99 percent or better UV protection.

	• Plastic frames with wrap-around styling to keep out wind and snow and minimize glare.

Remember the kids. Children need protection from the sun’s damaging UV rays, too. So lead by example and wear your sunglasses, and your kids will want to wear theirs, too.

	Alternatives to Sunglasses

As an alternative to sunglasses, there are special lenses you can use for your everyday eyeglasses called photochromic lenses. Photochromic lenses change from light to dark depending on the amount of ultraviolet light they are exposed to. In the sun, photochromics darken, and indoors, the lenses lighten. Photochromic lenses, especially when combined with an antireflective (AR) coating, can also reduce uncomfortable and disabling glare. In extreme conditions, like when skiing, ice fishing or distance driving, polarized lenses are also recommended. Reducing glare can help improve your overall quality of vision and minimize eye strain and fatigue. Regular visits to your optometrist or ophthalmologist are a simple step you can take to care for your eyes. During your next eye exam, don’t forget to discuss with your eye care provider the types of lenses that are available to you and the importance of UV protection.

Why? Motte isn’t blind, but his nearsightedness is so severe that he often squints on the mound to see what signs his catcher is showing him. Motte has tried prescription eyewear (as pictured), but has found the challenges they present greater than those presented by his nearsightedness. So, Motte has decided to take to the mound without any vision assistance, and, judging by this Yahoo!

The aesthetic design of LUNOR eyeglasses is based upon a collection of optical antiques from the years 1650 to 1950, belonging to one of the foremost collectors of optical antiques in Europe, Gernot Lindner. Simply perfect, the language of the shapes of historic eyeglasses is clear and well balanced. The LUNOR collections show this in a modernized way, with glasses made of materials that have proven their worth for centuries, handmade and following an old tradition with more than 200 working steps.

Do use hypoallergenic makeup?

Hypoallergenic makeup was introduced to the market in 1953. It describes products that are less likely to cause an allergic reaction. It is not an official medical term, so claims that a product is hypoallergenic might apply to some people and not to others who are actually allergic to the products that other people are not allergic to. In any event, better safe then sorry when it comes to your eyes! Signs of eye allergies that might be caused by the type of eyeliner or mascara you use include itching, tearing and puffy lower eyelids.
Product Approval and Regulation
FDA’s legal authority over cosmetics is different from other products regulated by the agency, such as drugs, biologics, and medical devices. Cosmetic products and ingredients are not subject to FDA premarket approval authority, with the exception of color additives. However, FDA may pursue enforcement action against violative products, or against firms or individuals who violate the law.
Cosmetic firms are responsible for substantiating the safety of their products and ingredients before marketing. Failure to adequately substantiate the safety of a cosmetic product or its ingredients prior to marketing causes the product to be misbranded unless the following warning statement appears conspicuously on the principal display panel of the product’s label:
“Warning–The safety of this product has not been determined.” (21 CFR 740.10)
In general, except for color additives and those ingredients which are prohibited or restricted from use in cosmetics by regulation, a manufacturer may use any ingredient in the formulation of a cosmetic provided that the ingredient and the finished cosmetic are safe, the product is properly labeled, and the use of the ingredient does not otherwise cause the cosmetic to be adulterated or misbranded under the laws that FDA enforces.
Your best bet is to use a product from an established cosmetics company; one with many products on the market and a good reputation as there is no regulatory agency that approves cosmetics to market.

Do Not share eye makeup with others
Eye makeup applicators become contaminated with bacteria the second the bottle is opened, and get a heavy dose of bacteria when applied to the margins of the eyelids or the eyelashes. One role of the eyelashes is to collect microorganisms like bacteria and viral particles before they get in the eye, so they are loaded with these vermin. The lower eyelids are a common place for bacteria to thrive, so applying makeup to them causes you to wipe up some bacteria onto your applicator and introduce it into the cosmetic vial you are using where it multiplies. Did I gross you out? Don’t share!
Do not apply eye makeup on eyelid margin behind eyelashes
There are important glands that are on the margins of the eyelids just behind (closer to the eye) the eyelash line. By applying makeup along the inner eyelid margins, the glands can become clogged and lead to a condition known as meibomitis.

One last tip, do not poke yourself in the eye with mascara brush
Just had to throw this one in – hope you knew it already.
